Wilderness Immersion: HG’s Unique Approach to Therapeutic Recreation

In the heart of Idaho's Wilderness, a group of determined individuals embarked on an exceptional journey in mid-August, setting the stage for a forthcoming elk hunt in late October. This event marked a milestone for Higher Ground, an Idaho-based non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing lives through therapeutic recreation and education.

This training session marked a significant stride for Higher Ground, an Idaho-based non-profit with a mission to enrich lives through the power of therapeutic recreation and education. This two phase endeavor is Higher Ground’s first ever Elk Hunt. With a special focus on serving individuals with diverse disabilities, veterans, and first responders, Higher Ground embarked on this unique adventure with six military veterans. Their training phase commenced near a wilderness trailhead, where they focused on refining horsemanship and practicing rifle accuracy.

On the second day, our group journeyed on horseback and with pack animals, traversing 12 miles of challenging terrain into the heart of the Wilderness. Participants engaged in an intensive training program including survival skills to improved marksmanship, the curriculum aimed to prepare them for the forthcoming challenges of elk hunting in late October. Expert guides led the way, ensuring every aspect of the hunt was covered with meticulous attention.

Beyond a simple training endeavor, the trip evolved into an unforgettable experience for multiple reasons. Forged through shared trials and immersive learning, the group solidified bonds of trust and companionship. The vast expanse of the Frank Church Wilderness provided a jaw-dropping backdrop, inviting participants to relax amidst the sprawling vistas.

Anticipating the forthcoming elk hunt in late October, these images encapsulate shared experiences and the thrill of what lies ahead.
